The term “chronotopy” [derived from chronotopos, from Ancient Greek chronos + topos, meaning ‘time-space’] is a concept borrowed from physics. Since antiquity, philosophy and science have speculated about this dichotomy, grappling with the complex task of defining, experiencing, and understanding these elusive concepts.

In the context of Silvia Rivas’ work, it refers to the way she explores the relationship between time and space, often blurring the boundaries between the two.

Chronotopies contextualizes more than 25 years of Silvia Rivas’ artistic career, focusing her work on the tension between space and time. Over the years, Rivas has developed a growing interest in time-based arts and site-responsive practices, adopting a unique approach to video through the use of slow motion, extended playback, and time-lapse effects. The artist has refined this approach through increasingly complex video installations, animations, and liminal environments.

Silvia Rivas’ artistic research is a deep journey through themes such as identity, memory, society, and perception. Her work combines visual, sound, and performative elements to create captivating and emotionally resonant experiences for the audience. Since the late 1990s, Rivas has explored the expressive possibilities of expanded cinema, pushing the boundaries of video as a medium, and creating multimedia performances and immersive environments.

This exhibition, whose first version was presented at the Museum of Modern Art of Bogotá (MAMBO), showcases—not only the artist’s work—but also the construction of a virtuous collaboration between MAMBO and MUNTREF, which grows stronger with each new project.
